How to Join
Joining Troop 7 is easy! Here’s how to get started:
Reach Out
Fill out our Contact Form or email us at contact-us@troop7va.org to let us know you’re interested.
Visit a Meeting
Come to one of our weekly meetings to meet the troop, learn what we do, and ask questions. Parents are welcome too.
Potential scouts are welcome to attend any of our meetings, which occur every Thursday from 7:00 to 8:15 PM at Floris United Methodist Church (13600 Frying Pan Rd, Herndon, VA 20171). For upcoming meetings, please click on the Calendar and Events link.
We also offer Webelos in the Woods each November, which is an outdoor adventure designed especially for Webelos Scouts to experience the fun and challenges of camping. This event gives Scouts the chance to learn essential outdoor skills, explore nature, and build confidence while meeting current Troop 7 members. Activities often include fire building, first aid, outdoor cooking, knots, and team challenges, all while fostering Scout spirit and camaraderie around the campfire.
Guided by experienced leaders, Webelos in the Woods is a perfect introduction to Scouts BSA-style camping and helps prepare youth for the next step in their Scouting journey.
Register
For those new to Scouting:
Complete the official BSA Youth Application online at https://beascout.scouting.org/ after selecting the local unit Troop-0007 and submit it with the annual registration fee. Our leaders can walk you through the process.
For those currently in a Cub Scout Pack:
You must initiate the transfer via your Scoutbook account at my.scouting.org. Note: you should NOT initiate a transfer until all advancements and awards for the AOL year have been made to the account as it is very difficult to make these changes after a transfer.
Once you are logged into your account, navigate to My Application on the left hand side of the browser. Under My Application, click on the tab for Transfer/Multiple Applications. Click on Transfer for the cub scout you would like to transfer and select Unit: Troop, Unit Number: 7 and click Search. Troop 7 chartered at Fair Oaks volunteer Fire and Rescue Company 21 will pop up in the list. Please select Troop 7 and the transfer will be initiated.
Get Your Uniform
Purchase a Scout uniform.
Troop 7 takes pride in the uniform and it is worn to all Troop meetings. The uniform includes a tan shirt, green bottoms (pants, shorts, and/or skort), green shoulder loops (for those who did not bridge from a Cub Scout Pack). Socks, belt, and cap are optional.
The uniform can be purchased from any Scout Shop. Check this link for nearby scout shops.
You will not need to purchase a handbook or neckerchief as those items are provided as part of the new member fees to the Troop.

Q: How and when to pay annual dues?

The annual renewal of your National Scouting membership is paid online through your(parent’s) my.scouting.org account. Create your account using the same email address you used when your child first joined Scouting; this will automatically link your Scout to your profile- if not, contact Troop 7. Once logged in, go to “My Applications” to pay the renewal/dues. You should receive an email from scouting.org with a direct link to renewal roughly two months before your membership expires. Renewal fee due either 12 months after your initial registration or by December 31, whichever applies based on when your Scout first joined.
The annual renewal fee for your Troop 7 membership is due each calendar year (by December 31) and is paid directly to the Troop 7 Treasurer via Zelle (treasurer@troop7va.org), check, or cash.
Both of these fees have mitigation available in case of financial hardship. You can apply for this assistance here: https://247scouting.com/forms/082-FinancialSupport. If you have a question on this, please reach out to Committee (contactus@troop7va.org) or the Scoutmaster, Mr. Dunham.

Q: Can parents get involved?
A: Absolutely! We encourage all parents to be an active participant in the Troop. All committee members and Scout Masters are made up of fellow parents. Committee meetings are held monthly at the same time as the Scouts. We have a variety of positions to consider and welcome all parents to join the Committee Meetings, whether or not they have a specific role on the Committee. For those who enjoy working directly with the Scouts and attending campouts, there are also Assistant Scoutmaster positions available.
Q: What if I can’t make every meeting or event?
A: That’s okay! We encourage regular attendance, but we know families have busy schedules. Scouts can still advance and fully participate even if they miss occasionally.
